Cigarette Litter Prevention on Colfax
In the past decade, cigarette smoking in America has decreased 28%, yet cigarette butts remain the most littered item in the U.S. and across the globe. Dropping cigarette butts and cigar tips to the ground, putting them in planters, and disposing of them in waterways is littering.
In 2018, the Colfax Ave Business Improvement District (BID) was lucky enough to receive a $10,000 grant from Keep America Beautiful’s Cigarette Litter Prevention Program to help decrease cigarette litter along the Colfax corridor.
The Cigarette Litter Prevention Program (CLPP), now in its 18th year, is the nation’s largest program aimed at reducing cigarette litter. Since its inception, the program has been implemented in more than 1,700 U.S. communities.
The BID used the funding to install ten dome lid ash trays throughout the district, along with three standalone ash trays at cigarette hot spots within our district. We hope that these receptacles make it easier for patrons to dispose of cigarette butts in the proper way.
