Anyone who knows Colfax knows that the tattoo shops are one of the cornerstones of the community and some of the longest-standing fixtures of the street. In 2019, 12 artists from End of Days (EOD) Tattoo, Bound by Design, and Lifetime Tattoo designed the BID’s set of street banners, which line the street from Grant to Josephine.

“The ability to work on a Colfax project, involving so many of my peers, on the most historic street in the country, is an opportunity that one doesn’t turn down,” said Travis Koenig of Bound by Design. “Experiencing this street since I was a kid, I’ve been able to look past the grime in the gutter and appreciate the uniqueness that Colfax possesses.”

The designs are as eclectic as they come, much like the street they border. As you walk along Colfax from the State Capitol to East High, you’ll see a little bit of everything, from the abstract to the colorful and bizarre. Each artist brought their own style and Colfax experience to the table.

“We wanted to bring a little of us to this weird and wild street,” said Melon Davis of EOD Tattoo. “Our hope was to add a little color to people’s daily life and brighten up their time in our neighborhood. It’s impossible to live and work on Colfax without it leaving its imprint on you.”

The local tattoo shops have certainly stood the test of time on Colfax. EOD has been around the longest, established in 1978 with the original name of Emporium of Design. Bound by Design was founded in 1993 and Lifetime Tattoo in 2001. Which means, they’ve seen some stuff. But it seems that they wouldn’t have it any other way.

“I’ve always had a love affair with a wild soul that cannot be controlled,” said Ed Teply of Lifetime Tattoo. “I love you, Colfax, warts and all.”

Meet the artists and tattoo shops behind the banners below.

Artist: TeddyNIGELS

Shop: The Little Black Church (formerly End of Days Tattoo)
Instagram: @teddynigels
Website: www.teddynigels.com Inspiration: At this point within the historical art cannon everything will wind up digital. Whether you're building an online presence, submitting to galleries or making prints of hard copy work -- you'll have to make that jump at some point. I've always figured, "why not just start there?"

Artist: Travis Koenig

Shop: Bound by Design
Instagram: @travisktattoos
Website: traviskoenig.com
Inspiration: Colfax is the seediest and most decadent stretches of road I have ever been. Experiencing this street since I was a kid, I have been able to look past the grime in the gutter and appreciate the uniqueness that is one in its own. Colfax has its own touch of beauty, but very near is its danger. Reminding to me to never let my guard down and take a moment to smell the roses. This street is tough, and even though it’s accommodating to everybody, only the resilient will ever truly enjoy it.

Artist: Corey Strange

Shop: Think Tank Tattoo (formerly Bound by Design)
Instagram: @strange_ink
Inspiration: I wanted to make something fun and exciting that included imagery that the people of Denver and Colfax would enjoy. I wanted to share the opportunity to expose my art and creativity with the history of Colfax with a group of similar artists, while also showing my appreciation to the colorful entities within.

Artist: Walter McDonald

Shop: Lifetime Tattoo
Instagram: @saltywalt
Bio: Walter is a skilled fighter, capable of defeating the best warriors of heaven. Each of his hairs possesses magical properties, capable of being transformed into clones of Walt himself, and/or into various weapons, animals, and other objects. He knows spells to command wind, part water, conjure protective circles against demons, and freeze humans, demons, and gods alike.

Artist: Ed Teply

Shop: Lifetime Tattoo
Instagram: @edwardteply
Inspiration/Bio: “I've frequented Colfax since 2001 and moved here in 2013. I've always had a love affair with a wild soul that cannot be controlled. I love you Colfax warts and all.” Ed's paintings come from ideas that are out of his reach, yet his inner self respect forces him to reach that limit and furiously paint it until he is able to master the concept. As long as there are trees reaching to the sun and breath in his lungs, Ed Teply will forever battle the woes in this universe with his paint brush and paper. And win.

Ed is greatly missed on Colfax. You can donate to his memorial fund here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/ed-teplys-memorial-fund

Artist: Sam Perry

Shop: Copperhead Tattoo (formerly Bound by Design)
Instagram: @samperrytattoos
Inspiration: My artistic inspiration is based the same traditional style tattoo art that has been prevalent in Colfax’s tattoo scene for decades. It’s great being part of Colfax and its tattoo history.

Artist: Mandy Hazell

Shop: The Little Black Church (formerly Bound by Design)
Instagram: @mandy_pants_tattoos
Inspiration: I’ve worked at Bound By Design for over a decade and have also worked for multiple businesses that are located on Colfax, so when I was asked if I’d like to design a banner that would be displayed on the iconic street, my answer was an easy ‘heck yes!’. I believe Colfax is one of the most lively and interesting streets in America and anyone that has spent time on it has a unique love for it. There is never a dull moment and it has and will always have a special place in my heart, so I’m very excited to be included in this awesome project alongside so many talented friends and artists!

Artist: Kirk Wilken

Shop: Lifetime Tattoo
Instagram: @lifetime_kirk
Inspiration: The Black Panther symbolizes courage, valor, and power, death and rebirth. Entangled with a machine it could never imagine. The panther looks inside itself to realize that all experience is inherently deceptive, all form is inherently deceptive, all sound is inherently deceptive. In time, the panther will discover that even its belief in deception is a lie. Thankful to be a chosen participant and to have my artistic endeavors adorn Colfax. A street we all call home. I hope that people’s eyes will widen with excitement and wonder to these unknown and abstract images we have created.

Artist: Jon Hall "Honest Jon"

Shop: End of Days Tattoo

Inspiration: When I had originally created this piece, my main goal was to stay neutral and earthtone with the pallet aside from the bright yellow. I used the imagery of the great horned owl, native to Colorado, in hopes to represent our state, and bring some 'nature' back to Colfax.
